THE NURSERY GROWS A WIDE RANGE OF NATIVE AND ORNAMENTAL PLANTS. THERE IS A BUSY PROPAGATION, POTTING AND PLANT CARE SCHEDULE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WITH ALL PRODUCTION EVENTUALLY BEING SOLD FROM THE CAMELIA BOTNAR GARDEN CENTRE. YOU WILL GAIN EXPERIENCE IN ALL ASPECTS OF THIS PROCESS, AS WELL AS IN HARD AND SOFT LANDSCAPING USING A WIDE RANGE OF EQUIPMENT THAT YOU CAN GAIN TICKETS FOR. THIS WILL SET YOU UP FOR GREAT EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES.

Our Landscaping & Horticulture Department can help you to...

  • Get chainsaw, hedge cutter, strimmer and spraying tickets
  • Gain nursery experience, including plant care and propagation
  • Learn paving, turfing and timber construction
  • Carry out landscaping and planting schemes
  • Get Working at Heights & Emergency First Aid qualifications
  • Get your licence to work on sites (CSCS Card)
  • No prior experience is necessary as full training is given

Learning basics of the trade and gaining work experience.
Test days and opportunities to take tests may come in Level 1, but by the end of Level 2 & Extension, trainees should have had the opportunity to take tests and acquire some or all of:

  • Chainsaw
    • Maintenance
    • Cross-cutting
    • Felling up to 15″
    • Ariel rescue
    • Climbing (handsaw)
    • Rope & harness (chainsaw)
  • Hedgecutter and Strimmer tickets
  • Spraying ticket
  • Driving Theory
  • Health & Safety
  • Manual handing
  • Working at Heights
  • Emergency First Aid

Examples of dept skills you can learn:

  • Cut a hedge safely and tidy up afterwards
  • Use a chemical sprayer competently
  • Learn about different watering and nutrition requirements for each plant
  • Pot up plug plants, summer bedding & perennials
  • Kit-out grow spaces, lay down capillary matting and weed barriers
  • Understand and implement correct nutrition for different plants
  • Create displays & develop planting schemes
  • Use optical levelling equipment
  • Lay paving
  • Timber construction for fences & beds

Increasing work experience and skill level.

Trainees who prove themselves and for whom it is deemed appropriate there may be opportunities to extend the placement and achieve a deeper level of work experience and skill.

Trainees might get the opportunity to work toward or achieve some part of the following:

  • Opportunity to continue work experience through the remaining 2 seasons and gain experience of every season
  • Further opportunity to pass some or all of the tests listed above
  • Opportunity for practical driving lessons
